How tcad came about

I have always had the fondest memories of my childhood, growing up in Chicago. It was the type of environment that simply does not exist anymore. We lived in a third floor apartment close to one end of Fargo Avenue, near Greenview. There were many kids in the neighborhood, from all walks of life and many from different countries. I remember the old women, who wore babushkas and always dressed in black, even in the middle of summer. They'd call to their grandchildren, playing in the streets. In their homes, some from Poland, some from Yugoslavia, there were many generations living in the same apartment.

In my apartment, I lived with my older brother Hank, my parents and my grandmother, Frances May O'Connor. My main character in There Came a Day is named after Gram - Margaret Frances O'Connor - and while the characters in Maggie's family are fictional, they all carry a little bit of the people I knew back then. The kids in my neighborhood built go carts out of discarded buggies, string and glue. In the winter we skated on a hand-made ice pond near Lake Michigan. In the fall, we played in the piles of leaves that were raked up by the janitors all over the neighborhood. It was like a small town, with alleys and byways to play in. In the summer, after dinner, we'd play hide and seek or tag in the streets until dark. There was no danger where I lived; it was all like family.

The TCAD story begins overseas, in England. Three first-year college students at the University of London are taking a break from studies by visiting the white cliffs of Dover on an outing. A terribly tragedy happens to one of the boys, the one from Ireland, and the results of those injuries were still evident in the lives of the witnesses years later. The other two boys eventually make it to Chicago, right into Maggie O'Connor's neighborhood, and that is where the real fun in this story begins.

I hope you enjoy the read! :)
